This past September, the World Rowing Championships returned to the United States for the first time in 20 years and the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Embracing Our Differences and Benderson Development Company partnered on a new initiative called “Adopt a Team.”  During the competitions, students from Sarasota and Manatee counties attended and were exposed to, educated and provided international experiences all while gaining knowledge about the countries participating in the regatta. For example, students at one school were researching China, while students at another school were learning about Israel.

An additional educational component of the Adopt a Team initiative is artwork created by more than 2,200 students at 40 schools during the spring of 2017.  The art represents the life and culture of 59 of the countries who participated in the 2017 World Rowing Championships.  Embracing Our Differences displayed the art in a bill-board size format at the Nathan Benderson Park as they do each spring during its annual Embracing Our Differences Exhibit in downtown Sarasota. More than 47,000 spectators, 1,700 athletes and 5,500 students were able to see the artwork up close and personal.

What may be the most exciting part of the Adopt a Team initiative for the students, was the opportunity to attend the 2017 World Rowing Championships. Those students traveled to the event, observed the competitions, cheered on their "adopted" teams, had the opportunity to meet with participating athletes and viewed the Embracing Our Differences Rowing Art Exhibit.

Students had the opportunity to play a small role in something that is much bigger than themselves while learning the importance of being a good global citizen.

Thank you for your participation in the Adopt a Team initiative which is generously underwritten by the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Benderson Development Company and Embracing Our Differences.
