Throw Down Your Arms and Come
by Areta Buk

Brooklyn, New York

FROM THE ARTIST: This piece began as a talisman for peace. The title borrows from the lyrics of Winston Rodney, also known as Burning Spear, a Jamaican roots reggae singer and musician, known for his positive message of honesty, peace and love. In the song, “Throw Down Your Arms and Come”, he advocates dropping the weapons of brute force and ignorance, and using reason to embrace our differences. The four figures illustrate the Hopi prophecy of the World of the Fifth Hoop where the four sacred colors (representing brothers and sisters from four different directions: yellow from the East, black from the South, red from the West and white from the North) will reconnect “to create something new that has not been seen since the beginning of time.” Each of the figures assumes the same gesture with an open heart, suggesting our common ground of individual experience, as well as symbolizing the collective body.
