That my skin was
DIFFERENT
from theirs and theirs
from mine
meant nothing to us kids.
Later I learned that for some
people it meant everything.

FROM THE ARTIST: My mixed media piece consists of an oil painting on two panels, representing that we are individuals. Parts of an antique map were collaged inthe background and stained. I also used chicken wire to represent fences, or barriers, that we must tear down. Metal flashing and wire were used to form the shackles. “One” shows that we are all unique individuals joined together in the this world as one human race.
